Widely used in marine, aeronautical radio and telephony communications to spell out important words or call signs where ever accuracy is important.  Before using the phonetic alphabet, you should used the prowords (procedure words) 'I SPELL'.

Calling the coastguard on VHF radio, you might say "My call sign is MSFS"          'I spell'   Mike....Sierra....Foxtrot....Sierra.
